I’m torn -
A barbed wire fence
or
a stack of dead bodies in front of a firing squad...
I’m 36, and attended public schools. I had an assignment like this.
We learned about Communism (Millions dead, no hope for success, serf living and political elites) and we were also taught about the changing of hands and instable governments that Communism brought about.
We were asked to design flags. The ultimate lesson was to show us (After making our flags) what the flags of these countries actually looked like. The Russian flag being the most remarkable. Other than that, the lesson was that these horrible countries often made beautiful flags and boasted about how great they were. Intricate lions and eagles, peace branches and scenes of prosperity were in fact, lies.
Then we learned about our own flag- And this is what gets me. I ask young kids (18 and younger) to describe our own flag - and they can’t. They say “it has a bunch of stars and stripes” but can’t tell me how many, or what they represent.
Since being an adult, I continuously seek to remove stars from my flags. New Jersey, New York, California, etc :)
Why not both?

You are right.
I spent almost ten years in the formerly Communist countries of central Europe.
One notable spot was in Slovakia, where just across the Danube was a very short strip of Austria.
It was one of the few spots where freedom seekers would try to swim the Danube to freedom.
Many were shot from a two story concrete building with three gun ramps on the roof. The building is still there.
There is now a monument to those that were shot, trying to escape to the west.
One good story is the guy who built a hot air balloon and took his family across in the middle of the night.
With half of the US in love with Obumbo, it is not out of the question that the USA could become the USSA.
Every freedom lover had better be preparing an escape plan.
