In 2011, gun owners in the United States outnumbered hunters by 5 to 1.
There were 13.7 million hunters in the United States over age 16 -- 12.7 million of whom used rifles, shotguns or handguns for hunting, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
That means hunters constituted only 15.9 to 18.1 percent of the estimated 70-80 million gun owners in the U.S. in 2011 -- the latest year for which statistics are available.
In a Dec. 28 national report, USF&W said 13.7 million individuals over age 16 self-identified as hunters, and that 12.7 million used guns (shotguns, rifles or handguns) while hunting.
Another 2.9 million hunters used antique muzzleloaders to hunt, but according to USF&W, there is overlap between this figure and other figures due to self-reporting.
Around 4.5 million hunted with bows and arrows.

I wish that all these writers and politicians would stop equating gun ownership with hunting! The last time I looked there was NOTHING about hunting in the Constitution.
Because the right to keep and bear arms ain’t about hunting, Jack.
There are an estimated 315 million people in the US and 115 million households. Realizing the the 70-80 million number comes from the NRA -- only 70-80 gun owners still sounds low.
There are a lot of guns in America that have never required any kind of registration. In fact most guns are probably in that category.
I don’t think I know anyone who owns just one gun.
And US gun owners are going to outnumber Ubama’s armed brown shirts 100 to 1.
“but it’s more fun in a Porsche”
Having owned several over the past 45 years, I’ll
second that!
Yes, nobody is going gently to the re-education camp or the mandatory volunteer work camp.
It’s not about hunting. Which word don’t Liberals understand?
I imagine that a good number of these gun owners are former hunters. I’m one of them. I have not hunted in years but I still own my guns.
The Fudds among us need to realize that hunting rifles & field shotguns are not immune to gungrabbers’ tender mercies.
Scope sighted rifle: “Medium range sniper weapon, ban it.”
Pump/Autoloader shotgun: “Rapid firing street sweeper, ban it.”
Large caliber revolver: “Dangerous concealable handgun, ban it.”
Been watching this gun control s*** ever since the JFK assassination. Those people will “never let a good crisis go to waste”.
Biden and Kerry each said they owned one shotgun each. The only gun owners I've ever heard of that only own one gun.
I would say that the average is between 3 and 5 for most people in this area with some owning considerably more.
I purchased it around 20 years ago. It came with 3 5 rounds magazines. At 200 meters, the range limit, I could consistently get it in the black. I've not fired it for several years though. It's Chinese but it is milled and the barrel is chrome lined.
You really know how to hurt a guy. Missed opportunity.
Blue steel, wood stock. What else should a gun be made of?
“A system of licensing and registration is the perfect device to deny gun ownership to the bourgeoisie.”~Vladimir Ilyich Lenin
The finest, most high tech yet reliable and durable materials to hand, of course.
Blue steel and wood are too high maintenance.
This is almost a complete 180 from where it was in 1993. Then it was hunters dominating the percentages - which was why they were able to get the bans through with the support of the Fudds.
Not so much any more.
