Duke Energy will close two of its oldest coal-fired power plants, Riverbend west of Charlotte and Buck in Rowan County in April, two years ahead of schedule.
Both plants date to the 1920s and had been planned for retirement in 2015. Theyre among a wave of older, smaller coal plants closing down rather than investing in new pollution controls to meet federal environmental regulations.
The plants had been little used in recent years as larger, more efficient plants came online and falling natural gas prices shifted generation to gas.

The article seems to be making a lot of excuses for the closings. The bottom line is that Obama's policies are going to cause rolling blackouts and greatly increased energy costs.... and massive job losses.
Duke just recently filed for major rate increases in all of its service areas.
While I hate the EPA, Duke is just as corrupt. I know from personal experience.
And the “green energy” idiots still think that electricity comes free and from wind/solar/algae. Morons have no idea of what’s really coming. SHTF.
I guess these people didn’t get the memo about our economic “recovery”.
yeah...and if the sun doesn't produce a good crop of sunspots by the middle of the next 11 year cycle....
....we in for at best another 400 year long mini ice age.
Duke isn’t stupid. They make profit, by any method possible. Unless you extend out competition and put them under a continual threat....that’s the only way to manage the system.
I read somewhere that one of their big wigs is joining the Obama cabal.
