Chris Kyle, Another Brother Lost

by · February 2, 2013 · Posted In: SOF News
Kyle

chris-kyle I am saddened to have to announce the tragic loss of another one of our own. This has been a hard year for the Special Operations community, perhaps the SEAL community most of all.

Today Chris Kyle was shot and killed at a shooting range at the Rough Creek Lodge in Texas, murdered along with a second individual.

Chris had been volunteering his time to help Marine Corps veterans suffering from PTSD and mentoring them. Part of this process involved taking these veterans to the range where one of them snapped and killed Chris and his neighbor for reasons that remain unknown at this time. The perpetrator then stole Chris’ vehicle in an attempt to escape but we have received word that the police have since arrested him.

Chris Kyle served as a sniper in the US Navy SEALs and is best known to the American public from writing his memoir, “American Sniper.” After his service, Chris ran a training program called The Craft. Although recognized as America’s deadliest sniper, Chris was known to friends as a very down to earth and humble man. He was also a friend of SOFREP and worked closely with Brandon Webb on a recent project of ours.

I just got off the phone with Brandon who is understandably upset over losing another friend not long after laying Glen Doherty to rest a few months ago. The entire SOF community is still in shock over this incident, and we will have more to say on the matter as the situation develops.

Right now it is simply the time to have a moment of silence for Chris Kyle and his friend who was murdered alongside him.

If a doctor gave the OK for men suffering from combat-oriented PTSD to go to a firing range as part of their treatment, that doctor needs to be brought before a review board.

Before my last deployment, my team and I went through a combat simulator. It used real weapons (m-9s and m-4s) with pneumatic hoses. You had the recoil without the danger of live ammo. You stood on a platform and the scenario played out on two huge screens.

The scenario changed based on your actions. They could make you run out of ammo or have your weapon malfunction so you would have to reload and clear. After a scenario they would play back so you could see how you did.

One of the Security Forces guys who ran it said he came back with mild PTSD. He said it actually helped him heal. This would have been a better option for Routh.

Give my condolences to your friend.

I appreciate your kindness, but I don't know her. I'm just posting what I've found on the internet. It's a horrible tragedy.

People with PTSD are not necessarily violent (as portrayed in movies and such). It’s mostly self-destructive behavior, depression, etc. They are more likely to harm themselves than anything else.

The Marine probably was just on a run to the store in Kyles truck, “someone” then kills the two Seals at the range and the blame immediately goes to the marine in that is off in Kyles truck. As you can see, if I can think it up such a scenario, so can “they”.
Its just strange that whatever obamas agenda is at the moment, that is the tragedies we keep seeing. Remember when obamas agenda was to stop offshore drilling? and suddenly one of our offshore rigs blows up killing Americans?? This is the way its been for the last 5 years.

(From Her Face Book)

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and many friends of former Navy SEAL Chris Kyle tonight. Todd and I first met Chris in Pella, Iowa, when he helped out with security for the premiere of the film “The Undefeated.” And later we became friends with Chris when he was on “Stars Earn Stripes” with Todd. Chris was a wonderful man, a good friend, and a true American hero who loved our country and served honorably. He was loved and admired by so many, and he will never be forgotten.

Really....that’s interesting. I’m actually open to the idea of being wrong. It’s just very hard to see how I could be.

With the type of PTSD I’m familiar, any attempt to desensitize would be catastrophic.

However, not all cancers kill so maybe there are sources of PTSD that lead to a sub-type of the disorder that responds to desensitization.

There have been too many incidents like this lately to be a coincidence.

Agreed!

http://www.foxnews.com/world/2011/08/06/afghan-president-31-americans-killed-in-helicopter-crash/

How about when 30 die in a chopper crash most of them from seal team six that took out OBL’s body double. Kind of ironic he was buried at seas where no DNA will eve be possible.
Two more die in Benghazi, Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty,
now Chris Kyle. Is all this coincidence?

THank God for Sarah!
You gotta wonder.

I’m no expert. I’m just repeating what the AF SP trainer said. He said that after coming home he had trouble sleeping, he was jumpy and certain things triggered panic attacks. When he first started running the simulator he said the video and sound got his heart racing. He said he could smell burning powder. After a month or so on the job, he said the sensations tapered off.

He was lucky to get this job after coming back from his deployment. It worked out great for him. In the same situation, others might have had a melt down.

Looks like a beautiful lodge and resort with many things to do. http://www.roughcreek.com/things-to-do
Did the police release a statement that he was at the range or a reporter, do you know?

Oh! Don’t ever dissuade me from taking a second look at a position I hold. Seriously, JimRob should issue Atta-Boy trophies to anyone who’s able to get me thinking about valid points of view regarding a subject I might be insane about....i.e. subjects people around me tersely label “Every Single Thing Ever, Idiot!”

My experience with PTSD is very different than the military-type experience and, in fact, was proposed to be pealed off from DSM-5 PTSD diagnosis and given the name “Developmental Trauma Disorder”. It’s looking more likely to be made a sub-type and given the informal name that’s been used for many years: “Complex PTSD”.

If it’s different enough for those kinds of changes, I’m probably barking out of my hat.

A news release attributed to the Texas Department of Public Safety is reported to say the shooting took place at the range.
