"Certainly one of the chief guarantees of freedom under any government, no matter how popular and respected, is the right of citizens to keep and bear arms. This is not to say that firearms should not be very carefully used, and that definite safety rules of precaution should not be taught and enforced. But the right of citizens to bear arms is just one more guarantee against arbitrary government, one more safeguard against tyranny which now appears remote in America, but which historically has proved to be always possible"
Senator Hubert H. Humphrey (D) Minn. "Know Your Lawmakers" Guns (magazine), February, 1960, p. 4.
Just go to the top of page 4 of the pdf to see it for yourself.
Regrettably, there seem to be no more Hubert Humphreys, Scoop Jacksons or Zell Millers in the RAT ranks. Too bad; they loved America and were willing to listen to reason instead of insisting upon ideology.
Things change in half a century
Most 60’s democrats were more like today’s GOP. Today’s DNC is more like the 60’s Communist party.
1960, eh?
Yes, as the “progressives” make their intention known and damn the Constitution.
“Things change in half a century”
Even on February 1, 2013 another Democrat—Slow Joe Biteme—basically admits that all this sturm und drang over guns is just smoke and mirrors: http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2013/02/01/biden-concedes-new-laws-wont-end-gun-massacres/
So, like Obamacare—if it won’t work or if ain’t broke why fix it?
For the same reason hounds lick their `nads: because they can.
1960
PS Specifically from the article today: “Nothing we are going to do is fundamentally going to alter or eliminate the possibility of another mass shooting or guarantee that we will bring gun deaths down,” Biden said, echoing remarks President Barack Obama made in January when he said “there is no law or set of laws that can prevent every senseless act of violence completely.”
Like the TARP bailout where we learned yesterday that taxpayers will lose even more billions, and healthcare where we learn every day of some new charge (tax, penalty, fine—whatever) here they say `It probably won’t work but .... ‘
After the (so called) `Assault Weapons Ban’ in `94, the Columbine school shootings in `99. Someone here posted several pages of school shootings that happened during the ten year ban.
We can also thank Democrats for `gun free’ school zones, happy hunting grounds for the criminally insane. The Democrats have the effrontery tot lump law abiding, tax-paying citizen gun-owners with criminals.
And the left scratches their pointy heads and can’t seem to understand our umbrage and why we have so little patience with their nonsense.
Doesn't seem so remote to many of us.
Per the Demolshevik Senator, I don't believe him. If he weren't a Communist, he wouldn't belong to the Democrat Party. Its really just that simple.
It was said in 1960.

Stom Thurmond was a Democrat in 1960 if I'm not mistaken.
Are some of you are missing the point of this post?
Want to drive a Minnesota Democrat insane? Tell him or her that today, Hubert Humphrey would be a Republican.
I’ve done it. It works.
Oh, I get it...this is coming from the only good dims around....
DEAD ones!
Hmmmm....I need to remember this! LOL,
But the right of citizens to bear arms is just one more guarantee against arbitrary government, one more safeguard against tyranny which now appears remote in America, but which historically has proved to be always possible”

.
That was then..... this is now. Once a liberal, socialist demoRAT will ALWAYS be a liberal, socialist demoRAT, grabbing as much power away from the people as possible.
I saw a similar quote from John Kennedy as well. Big deal!
I will guarantee that if JFK or HHH or Harry Truman were still alive today, they would be supporting 0dumb0sh_t & the radical socialist demoRATs right down the party line, including gun control, registration & confiscation. Once a socialist RAT bastard, always a socialist RAT bastard!
The america haters of the 60s now run america.
I think Ronald Wilson Regan would disagree with you...
Aren’t they already insane????? I agree however, despite all the current RATS love for John Kennedy, he would have to run as a Republican as well. In the 60’s they were not the Communist party, the Dems in college in the 60’s have made it into a full on Communist party without the derogatory name.
