Why doesn’t the current owner donate it himself and take a big tax write-off?

Why should he? He's 70. He may need the cash. What business of it of yours? There are plenty of 1%ers and foundations and museums that can come up with less than $2m if they want to for such a piece. If they don't care to... oh well.

My father, uncle, brothers, and I served and fought for this country. That's what makes it my business. The original Iwo Jima memorial should not end up in the hands of foreign interests, as Mr. Brown is intimating. It's personal for me. If he could afford to purchase it, he should be able to ensure it stays in the USA. For your edification, read “Prisoners of the Japanese” and “The Rape of Nanking.” And stop about 1%’ers. You sound like an OWS clone.
