The Soviets did it only after the German Army was in 50 miles of its capitol. Even then, the front line of the Red Army was 99 % male. Women were mostly snipers and such.
By the spring of 1945 about 20 percent of Soviet tanks had a women crew member, usually the tanks mechanic who also was the radio operator and hull machine gunner. In some cases, women commanded tanks. Also, Soviet artillery units had women on gun crews. While the Soviets did not assign women to infanty units as rilemen, they did serve in infantry units as medics, doctors and radio operators.
