PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Rhode Island House of Representatives on Thursday overwhelmingly passed legislation to allow gays and lesbians to marry in the only New England state where they can't.
The House voted 51-19 after an often emotional debate that touched on civil rights, religion and the nature of marriage. The bill now moves to the Senate, where both supporters and opponents of gay marriage say it is difficult to predict the bill's fate.
"This has been a long journey," said House Speaker Gordon Fox, who is gay and supported same-sex legislation when it was first introduced in 1997. "Today is a great day. Today ... we stand for equality, we stand for justice."
Thursday's vote posed the most significant challenge yet for gay marriage in Rhode Island. While the five other New England states already allow gay couples to marry, attempts have fallen flat in this heavily Catholic state.
"I wanted to be here to see it," said 70-year-old Warwick resident Ken Fish, who is gay. Fish showed up at the Statehouse hours early to ensure he had a seat in the crowded viewing gallery. "Go back 10 years, even five years, and I wasn't sure we'd ever get here. We're not done yet, but this is a big one."
Nine states and the District of Columbia now allow gay and lesbian couples to marry.

Although I don’t agree with it, if the majority of people RI decides to pass “gay marriage” (an oxymoron like “gay rights”), they may not have a moral right, but they do have a legal right to do so. If I lived there I would seriously consider moving to a Christian conservative state.
Considering what Christians did to marriage through unrepentant adultery and divorce, I would have to say that homosexuals will be waiting in line for awhile.
Rhode Island’s Governor Lincoln Chafee said he would veto a bill that was introduced that would have allowed the residents of Rhode Island to actually vote on whether or not they wanted fake marriage put into law. To the state in the modern era, marriage is simply whatever judges, pols, or 51% of the voting public think it is at any one time. That’s it, that’s all it can be. It can coincide with the actual version, or depart from it.

Even though Rhode Island is 'heavily Catholic', it's legislature is also heavily Democrat, and this is their latest pet issue.
This wasn't passed by the people of RI, but by the Democrat controlled legislature. Homosexual marriage was forced on the people of MA by the Supreme Judicial Court, and the Democrat controlled legislature refused the people of the Commonwealth the ability to vote on the issue.
In the vast majority of instances, voters haven't made the choice, it's been forced on them by their 'representatives', or the courts.

Maryland was the colony that was formed for Catholics to be safe, but it was open for all, as well.

In our Constitutional Republic, the people of each state have to deal with their own stuff. You seem to implying that somehow this should be bumped up to the Feds (a disaster)? If not, then instead of criticizing what I’m saying, why don’t you offer your solution if it’s not the people of each state working these problems out for themselves?
You may have a point about the courts, but elected legislatures are normally the way we make laws in this country. There were no public referenda on enacting the income tax, declaring war on Japan in World War II, making marijuana illegal or making no-fault divorce legal.
I was sorry to hear in the course of the Inaugural Festivities that the "National Cathedral" was now offering/allowing same-sex marriages to take place there...if it was just some ordinary Church, or even an "ordinary" Cathedral, it would be a bit different.
The point being, nine states and D.C. do not constitute "national", and this Cathedral is not representing the nation. It's too bad, and I hope the Catholics in Rhode Island stand up for truly representing their constituents.
That may be, but when public opinion is CLEARLY against an issue, and the courts and legislatures take it out of our hands, that is wrong. Sadly, too many people just let it go, thinking, well the law is passed, we can’t do anything about it, and don’t even vote against the legislator who voted against what his or her constituents wanted.

In the last 10 years, the Minnesota Legislature has approved public funding for a new professional baseball and a professional football stadium. Minnesota state law says that the residents of the county in which the stadium is going to be built are allowed to hold a referendum as to whether they want to be taxed.
In both cases, the legislature, after being pressured by the elites, stripped the referendum requirement from the bills - essentially letting the Legislature decide the matter. In both cases, these bills passed thru a GOP-controlled Legislature.
This type of elitist “we are sooo much smarter than you” thinking is not restricted only to the Democrats.
