Two-out-of-three Americans recognize that their constitutional right to own a gun was intended to ensure their freedom.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 65% of American Adults think the purpose of the Second Amendment is to make sure that people are able to protect themselves from tyranny. Only 17% disagree, while another 18% are not sure. (To see survey question wording, click here.)
Not surprisingly, 72% of those with a gun in their family regard the Second Amendment as a protection against tyranny. However, even a majority (57%) of those without a gun in their home hold that view.
Many gun control advocates talk of the right to gun ownership as relating to hunting and recreational uses only.
While there are often wide partisan differences of opinion on gun-related issues, even 54% of Democrats agree with 75% of Republicans and 68% of those not affiliated with either major party that the right to own a gun is to ensure such freedom.
As Americans search for answers to the Newtown shooting, attitudes on gun ownership are not likely to change in a nation where six out of 10 adults would rather live in a neighborhood where they can own a gun and most would feel safer if their children attended a school with an armed security guard. Scott Rasmussen explains in his latest weekly newspaper column that if Congress is not willing to go as far as the president wants on gun control, perhaps they might take stronger action on mental health issues or increase the penalties for crimes committed with a gun.
In the wake of last months horrific elementary school massacre in Connecticut, 51% favor stricter gun control laws. There is strong support for background checks of gun owners, but a plurality believes dealing with mental...

I hope the Republicans and Democraps are listening.
I think that what makes Liberals crazy is the perps of mass shootings quite often shoot themselves hence there is no one on whom to vent their anger. No one to punish.
So they take it out on the weapon and, by extension, lawful gun owners.
Can’t wait to see how the liberals at MSNBC spin these poll results.
Most likely they will ignore this poll. After all, so many people are bitter and cling to guns and religion. Such people are not enlightened. Only the talking heads at MSNBC have the wisdom and enlightenment to lecture us all on how to live. (Sarcasm)
Yep, if you want to know how to live, or what the 2nd amendment really means, ask liberals. Liberals will explain everything to us. (Sarcasm)
Now wait just a minute. Joe Scarborough just yesterday said this was not true. sarc tag really needed?
“the right of the PEOPLE to keep and bear arms” is the crux of the 2nd amendment. It says that the PEOPLE need to keep the militia in check or the militia (i.e., army or government controlled force) will become a threat to freedom. The people cannot keep the the militia regulated without the individual arms (of similar type) to confront the army or militia with.
If the lefties keep pushing gun control this way in another two decades one out of two Americans may be gun owners instead of one out of three.
MOLON LAVE! WE'LL MAKE MORE. ;-)
And the remaining 35% should see the necessity of having a firearm as protection against the ever-growing criminal element.

This poll is encouraging, but the problem is, polls don’t translate directly into laws not being passed. Look at Obamacare. Too many parliamentary tricks and middle-of-the-night, pass-it-to-find-out-what’s-in-it maneuvers are available to pass poison pills.
Below are some quotes of our Founding Fathers concerning their views of the importance of the right of Americans to keep and bear arms:
“A free people ought not only to be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government.”
- George Washington
“Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.”
- Benjamin Franklin
“Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote.”
- Benjamin Franklin
“The strongest reason for people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.”
- Thomas Jefferson
“No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms.”
- Thomas Jefferson
“I prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery.”
- Thomas Jefferson
“Arms in the hands of citizens may be used at individual discretion in private self defense.”
- John Adams
“To disarm the people is the most effectual way to enslave them.”
- George Mason (father of the Bill of Rights and The Virginia Declaration of Rights)
“Americans have the right and advantage of being armed, unlike the people of other countries, whose leaders are afraid to trust them with arms.”
- James Madison
“Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves.”
- William Pitt
“To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of the people always possess arms, and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them.”
- Richard Henry Lee
“Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect everyone who approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are ruined.... The great object is that every man be armed. Everyone who is able might have a gun.”
- Patrick Henry
“... arms ... discourage and keep the invader and plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property.... Horrid mischief would ensue were (the law-abiding) deprived the use of them.”
- Thomas Paine
“The Constitution shall never be construed to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms.”
- Samuel Adams

Good stuff.
PMSNBC will ignore the poll, but if they do mention it they’ll call Rasmussen a RIGHT-LEANING poll.
