We farm and own horses.
Yep, a lot of people don’t calculate that it costs a certain amount to buy the horse but then, it keeps eating whether it gets ridden or not.
Horse slaughter plants serve a sad purpose. Some horses just don’t have a future. I would rather they ride a few hours to a well-regulated US plant rather than get trucked for days out of the country.

You need to come out to Nevada and see for yourself the wild horses. The idea is great but because of the size of the herds it is not uncommon to see some that are damn close to starving. If the folks who support this idea would see for themselves the full picture they would agree the answer is to slaughter half of the herds.
There’s too many horses for land space available. In dry years these horses aren’t living the good life. BLM does a real crappy job at taking care of them. There’s not enough people willing to buy a wild mustang and feed it. People can’t sell a horse in my area because there’s no buyers. The horse ends up being turned loose to feed on its own.

Right. At least in the US, there is a chance the regulations of miminal humane treatment is expected. In Mexico, it's potluck.
A barely servicible rig(that was cited before as unsafe. but the title was transferred to a "new" owner/operater) filled with such poor animals, jacknifed just outside of Nashville(Tennesee) Turns out the bottom of the tantum trailer the horses were illegally transported was so rusted out it collapsed after hitting a bump,(at speed) spilling the poor beasts onto the freeway.
And yes it was headed to Mexico...
