Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino says hes putting his full faith in Vice President Joe Bidens gun control task force to recommend a ban on assault weapons, require background checks for all firearms purchases and make new laws designed to push prosecution of gun-running rings.
Menino, a fervent supporter of stronger gun control laws, told the Herald hed hardly be disappointed if Bidens group, com- missioned in response to the school massacre in Newtown, Conn., comes out with a proposal sim- ilar to the Biden-backed 1994 federal assault weapons ban.
Biden pushed the 1994 ban. Why not? Menino said yesterday in a telephone interview from the Parkman House. The vice president is committed to making sure we have a report coming out of this committee that makes a lot of sense and puts us on the right path. Weve been going the wrong way for a lot of years. Lets get back on the right path.
Menino, who is co-chairman of Mayors Against Illegal Guns alongside New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, weighed in early in the latest gun control debate, writing to President Obama last month and pushing a ban on high-capacity magazines and rifles, requiring background checks for all gun purchases including those made online and at gun shows and making gun trafficking a federal crime.
Biden this week laid out rough details of his groups proposal, saying it will ask for a ban on certain guns, along with limits on high-capacity magazines and universal background checks for gun buyers. The plan also is expected to include recommendations to address mental health care and violence on television and in movies and video games.
In a meeting yesterday with video game manufacturers, Biden showed interest in technology that would prevent a gun from firing when held by anyone but its owner.
The video game summit went more smoothly than a rancorous sit-down Thursday with the National Rifle Association. The powerful lobbying group has rejected proposals to limit high-capacity ammo magazines and has dug in on its opposition to an assault-weapons ban.
Menino said the contentious meeting with the NRA shows its not willing to negotiate.
Once again they want to play hardball. Just think back to the message they gave us after the school incident, he said, referring to the NRAs pitch for an armed guard in every school. Give me a break. I want to stop the flow of illegal guns.
It would be curious if the gun industry pushed back and said that they wouldn’t manufacture any high-capacity magazines (if they are outlawed)...even for the military or law enforcement. And then they could even force the issue via congress that federal law enforcement and the military could not import high-capacity magazines....making this a bigger mess than the gov’t wanted.
What’s good for the goose...ought to be good for the gander.
Gotta love this “backing up” of the man with the most useless and overpaid job in government when he has yet to do anything more than hint at what his “plan” might be.
“In a meeting yesterday with video game manufacturers, Biden showed interest in technology that would prevent a gun from firing when held by anyone but its owner.”
Looks like he missed his chance to say something about violent video games. And as for that bullsh!t about guns that recognize their owners, when the Secret Service adopts it then call me.
Surprise, surprise, surprise. Another gun-control nut supporting gun control.
Yawn.
That's right, the Left wants to know were every gun in the US is located. What's next?????
Automatic weapons are already outlawed
Semi-automatic weapons are already on the chopping block
Are revolvers next?
How long before my 1912 Sears single shot 12 gage is on the list?
How long before everyone’s background check comes back “disapproved”?
The plan is to alter the news cycle. It is succeeding.
Merino and Biden are coming for our guns, while they are surrounded by armed guards!
Anybody find the hypocrisy?
The matched set of bookends on the shelf marked “MORONS”!
Right on!! They are going to throw the BATFECES and Holder in prison -- where they belong!!
