Men won't face death penalty in Lansing slaying

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - The government won't seek the death penalty for a group of men charged in the 2010 death of a Lansing woman.

The Grand Rapids Press reported Friday (http://bit.ly/WxWIie ) that U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder notified West Michigan federal prosecutors of the government's decision.

Holder's letter reads: "You are authorized and directed not to seek the death penalty against Mustafa Abdul-Qadir Al-Din, Walee Abdullazeem Al-Din, Charles Kunta Lewis Sr. and Raphael Remier Crenshaw."

Those that are kind to the cruel, will cruel to the kind..

I don't know why it's a Federal matter. But why shouldn't the prosecutor seek the death penalty?

Johnson, 19, was dragged from her Lenore Street house, thrown into a car trunk and shot several times, according to court testimony.

They shot her because she lived near them and they planned to rob her of some marijuana they thought she had. She may not have been perfect, but she didn't deserve to die in the trunk of a car with thugs firing at her.

It was definitely premeditated and it was definitely homicide. So what's special about them?

These people are apparently accessories. They were part of a gang that stole drugs and resold them. Marijuana was being grown in the victim's home.

The article doesn't say but I'm guessing this is a Federal matter on some kind of drug or RICO charges.

Not true.

Commission of certain classes of crimes subjects them to Federal jurisdiction whether they occur on Federal property or not.

When a murder occurs during the commission of drug related crime, the Federal death penalty applies and Michigan's long standing absence of capital punishment is irrelevant.
