USDA: 1 in 4 children were on food stamps in fiscal year 2011

One in four children in America participated in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or food stamps, in fiscal year 2011, according to data from the United States Department of Agriculture and U.S. Census Bureau.

The USDA’s “Characteristics of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Households: Fiscal Year 2011” shows that in 2011, 19.9 million children, or people under 18, received food stamp benefits.

The Census estimates there were 73.9 million children living in the United States in 2011, meaning that 26.9 percent of children, or approximately one in four, were on food stamps in 2011.

The USDA notes that children constituted 45 percent of SNAP participants in 2011. Some philanthropists and policy experts believe efforts to reform SNAP because of high youth enrollment are misguided, arguing that the program ultimately helps the economy and improve kids’ health.

But Alabama Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions — one of the most vocal critics of the recent skyrocketing SNAP enrollment numbers and USDA’s promotion of the benefit — contends that something must be done about government policies and a USDA that he says is more interested in enrolling Americans in the program than finding real solutions.

O brave new world!

The children are fed, educated and largely indoctrinated WITHOUT much help from their ever more helpless parents.

On occasion, they are known to run amok and shoot up other helpless masses of people, because nobody was watching closely enough, or even if they were being watched, any real corrective action was denied for politically correct reasons.

For who is there, to teach them the importance and exercise of impulse control? No one, it would seem, because the responsibility for inculcating these moral values is being shrugged off or considered to even be oppressive. Thus a generation of essentially feral children grow up, insulated from the factors that shaped and defined their elders.

Do these numbers include the school breakfast, lunch and dinner programs along with WIC too?

Since money is fungible, seems to me one drawing food stamp or other welfare payments could easily underwrite a nice existance, not opulent, without working if they managed to put all the programs together. My wifes daughter has that skill, has not worked or bettered herself in 7 years since quitting school and going on the dole. Does not live great but does not want either as any “necessities” like health and car insurance are covered by my wife.

I STRONGLY believe that individuals identities of those on any form of public assistance should be publicized...it is my money and I need to know where it is going. Obviously “term limits” for benefits like unemployment insurance don’t work so maybe some form of public knowledge would help. Yeah I know, not PC to hurt anyones dignity but damn, when everyone is on the government dole, who is going to be paying for it???

Its easy to target those who use these programs for ridicule. Some people really need the help, folks. A good friend of mine used it for a period of time in 2011. One of the parents was out of work and just couldn’t find anything. They could not make it on just the other parent’s wages. It happens all the time.

The wife’s daughter should be able to get FREE health insurance or medicaid, maybe? Save your wife some money. IIRC, there was some theme going around in early December that, for a single mother with a couple of kids, she would have to work at a job that paid in the range of $60,000 per year in order to break even with what she can get by not working, receiving all of the government benefits.

I agree that there is a lot of “double dipping” going on with familiies receiving free meals for the kids at school and also receiving food stamps for those same kids, as if their three meals a day are being provided by the parent/s.

I also wonder, for every $1 taken from our taxes to pay for food stamps, what amount of change actually makes it through the government employees and administration process to the recipient?

I am sure all the talking heads will be talking about this statistic, but honestly, why are we surprised?

Think about it, out of wedlock birthrate under the age of 30 is 50%. The number of single mom households is soaring. Many of these families are from teenage moms. It is an undisputed fact that these families comprise the vast majority of households in poverty. It does not take a math genius to draw the line from out of wedlock birthrate to child poverty.

Until this country is willing to have an honest conversation about this problem, we should not be surprised by these figures.
