Esther Duflo is one of those people who are taken seriously by the sort of people who eat up TED talks with a silver spoon. Her big number is how to help people in the Third World up from poverty, which is a surprisingly profitable branch of economics when you consider the sheer number of NGOs and billionaires interested in getting into the aid business.
But theres one particular billionaire at Duflos back. Abdul Latif Jameel.
Esther Duflo is one of the co-founders of the Poverty Action Lab at MIT, more commonly known as J-PAL for the father of Abdul Latif Jameel aka Mohammed Abdul Latif Jameel, a Saudi billionaire with a net worth of approximately 5 billion dollars.
Mohammed Abdul Latif Jameel owns the worlds largest Toyota dealership and sits on the board of Coexist as well as a number of other organizations. And Jameel provided 3 major endowments for J-PAL. Around the same time the Abdul Latif Jameel Group sued the Wall Street Journal for reporting its presence on the list of accounts monitored for funding terrorism.
Mohammeds brother was sued by victims of Al Qaeda on accusations that he helped fund its terrorist activities after his name was found on a list in the offices of Benevolence International Foundation, an Al Qaeda front group started by Bin Ladens brother-in-law.
Now Obama has chosen Duflo to serve on the Presidents Global Development Council which will shape American global development policy worldwide.
UK car tycoon is accused of funding Osama bin Ladin
Yousef Jameel, whose family firm bought the British business Hartwell in 1990, is named in papers claiming more than $1 trillion damages from defendants accused of helping to fund Osama Bin Laden and his Al-Qaida network.
Lawyers acting for the families say Jameel was one of the rich Saudi individuals and businesses, targeted by fund-raisers acting for Muslim causes, including rebel fanatics, called ‘The Golden Chain” because their net worth totalled more than pounds 51 billion.
Money from Saudi Arabia is said in court documents to have financed Al-Qaida camps in Afghanistan where the hijackers trained. Jameel, whose family is one of the wealthiest in Saudi Arabia, is among 225 defendants named in papers filed in a Washington DC court.
Hartwell turns over more than pounds 600 million and employs 3,500 people in Britain. Its 48 outlets sell Audi, Volkswagen, Jaguar and Ford cars. Its other interests include property, financial services and computer software.
It was bought by the Saudi-based Abdul Latif Jameel Group (ALJ).
The Jameel family first made its money through a Toyota franchise in Saudi, along with oil, shipping and real estate.
Jameel’s lawyers argue that there is no case to answer. They say he has severed links with Hartwell and never supported or made donations, either directly or indirectly, to Bin Laden. They add that he has not been contacted by the lawyers for the September 11 case or served with papers, although he knew that a Yousef Jameel was cited as a defendant.
They also point out that other wealthy Arab donors have been defrauded into giving money for humanitarian causes which was used to fund Jihad fighters.
“Jameel recognises that because of his standing and prominence as a businessman in Saudi Arabia and his well known generosity it is understood, rightly or wrongly, that he is (the person named in the writ)” Jameel’s lawyers said.
ALJ made a substantial donation for “the rescue and help” of Muslims in Kosovo. In 1999, ALJ gave the Saudi Red Crescent about pounds 1.3 million. The Saudi Red Crescent, a charitable organisation modelled on the Red Cross and based in Riyadh, is also named as a defendant in the September 11 action. Jameel’s lawyer said his client was unaware of the donation.
Jameel was at the centre of a legal row in 1988 when he was accused by Carole Bailey, his British former wife, of kidnapping their daughter and holding her in Saudi Arabia. He had indicated in court that he would not prevent the girl’s return to Britain and had persuaded the court to remove a pounds 1m bond that would have been forfeit. It is understood that the row with Bailey has been resolved. After their acrimonious divorce, Jameel, who is in his late fifties, married Linda Richards, a former model with whom he has three daughters.
Jameel’s name was added to the list of defendants after the name “Yousef Jameel” was found on a computer disk seized by Bosnian police during searches of the offices of a charity known as the Benevolence International Foundation in Sarajevo in March last year.
Even McConnell and his swishy friends should be able to stop this one. A Marxist foreigner who has been backed by an Islamo-fascist! If this does not cause a public outcry, then nothing will ever stop the Dear Leader.
She has that classic libtard woman look. Vauguely female, clearly doesn’t smile much, very likely same sex oriented, probably self loathing and unhappy with her existence, and overly confident in her marxist beliefs.
I know this isn’t the most thoughtful reply, but as I read the excerpt I wasn’t at all surprised at her appearance. She only needs a Subaru station wagon and a Boston mailing address to tie it all together.
no one should be surprised at this at all. Obummer is a muslim, his intent is to destroy this country, and he will use French socialists, European billionaires, his czars, the Muslim Brotherhood infiltrators, the Communists in Congress, the idiots in academia, the moral-less Hollywood celebs, the foolish rich New Yorkers and anyone else he can bamboozle, blackmail, bully into following him.
Pied piper leading us off the fiscal cliff into the abyss of chaos, loss of American rights, assault on religion, forced health insurance, and continued degradation of our way of life.
Yeah, this obummer who lied about Benghazi, bowed to foreign rulers, and whispered to the Russian president he’d be “more flexible after the election.”
Nope, not surprised at all...
“If this does not cause a public outcry, then nothing will ever stop the Dear Leader.”
Brother... I think we’ve said that one a lot in the last four years. For so many of us the line was crossed long ago. Whatever the event or cumulative effect of events is the tipping point, I hope we get there sooner rather than later.
Sounds like Clintons...
Can Duflo be tied to supporting or encouraging groups anti-Christian/Jewish activities ? Can this explain why the demo-coms are demanding eliminating tax write offs to certain non-profit NGO’s ? Or of Obama’s war on a major Christian religious group ?
Another of Demon Leader’s fellow muslims.
An Egyptian paper is putting out up to 6 Muslim Brotherhood members are in the Obama Administration - most in Homeland Security.
Arabs have the money - something dems have been known to bow before... and bow before and bow before....
Daniel Greenfield’s work is cut out for him.
As long as there are people funding jihad, there will be an unlimited number of jihadis. The way to cripple the Global Jihad is to go after the money men behind it.
Why do we have a “Global Development Policy?”
This is an advisory council.
DING DING DING. We have a winner.
Exactly. The entire premise of being good little global citizens has so permeated the culture we don't even react that this BS is being promoted.
We should be demanding a complete withdraw, not worrying about who the Kenyan Traitor is advancing for the role.
If the Soviet penetration of Washington, D.C., was so wide and so deep that it functioned like an occupation
If, as a result of that occupation, American statecraft became an extension of Soviet strategy
If the people who caught on investigators, politicians, defectors and tried to warn the American public were demonized, ridiculed and destroyed for the good of that occupation and to further that strategy
And if the truth was suppressed by an increasingly complicit Uncle Sam
Would you feel betrayed?
