Isn’t it about time they stopped serving alcohol in airports and on planes?

You ask the right question. Airlines are hypersensitive to unruly passengers -- to the point of going overboard at times-- but their concern is understandable given the security risks. One would think that cutting off alcohol would be a way to avoid these situations. However, that would reduce one huge profit center on flights and we know airlines aren't going to do that without a fight (no pun intended).

They didn’t serve him alcohol. According to the article he “drank all of his duty-free liquor on the flight,.”

It was duty free, but those little beverage and food carts are money makers for the airlines now.
