Typically Indians *like* guns and want gun freedom, but they are saddled with strident British colonial gun control laws, created because the British were terrified of an armed revolt.
And the reason these laws haven’t changed is because the Indian political left is all in favor of gun control. Here is a good write up by a pro-gun Indian.

Good. The average woman has relatively little chance unarmed against the average unarmed man. Throw in the facts that the man gets to choose his target and the timing of the attack, with surprise, and these encounters will not end well for the vast majority of women. Even a very big man has relatively little chance against an armed woman who is willing to shoot, not at the ranges relevant for defending against a personal attack. Anti-gun is an inherently anti-woman position. I often wonder if that is why Obama and so many other leftists are anti-gun.
