Pray for Our American Heroes and Nation (12/31/12)
December 31, 2012 | Faith

Posted on 12/31/2012 11:26:18 AM PST by Faith

But you, beloved, building yourselves up on
your most holy faith,
praying in the Holy Spirit,
keep yourselves in the love of God,
looking for the mercy of our
Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
Jude 20-21

Holy God,

Today by Your grace, we end another year of our Lord. We do so with grateful hearts and humble spirits, for we know without a doubt that You have been our Guide and our Strength in 2012. And now we look forward to the coming year and pray that You help us to be wise and vigilant, building ourselves up on our most holy faith. Help us to commit to praying in the Holy Spirit, keeping ourselves in the love of God as we look for the mercy of our Savior, Jesus. God, our help in ages past, You are our Hope for years to come.

Bless this nation, Lord, wayward as it may be. Help us to do what we can to bring kindness and the love of Jesus to everyone whose lives we touch. Make us instruments of Your peace in all that we do. We ask You to turn the hearts of our president and congress to You, that righteous leadership would once again emerge and be valued in this nation.

Father, we confess that You will keep our military men and women from stumbling and to present them faultless before the presence of Your glory with exceeding joy. May they stand behind the banner of the Lord Jesus and follow You all of their days.

God, our Savior, You alone are wise. To You be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever. Amen.

Lord, may we increase our commitment to praying in the Holy Spirit for our troops and our nation. Place Your prayers in our hearts, and may our High Priest in Heaven respond in ways far more wonderful than we can imagine or think. In Jesus Holy Name, Amen.

The Power Of Terminal Thinking

December 31, 2012

As we look forward to the New Year with plans and resolutions, the voices of godly men from the past encourage us to think about something we prefer to ignore—our own death.

Thomas à Kempis (1379–1471) wrote, “Happy is he that always hath the hour of his death before his eyes and daily prepareth himself to die.” And Francois Fénelon (1651–1715) wrote, “We cannot too greatly deplore the blindness of men who do not want to think of death, and who turn away from an inevitable thing which we could be happy to think of often. Death only troubles carnal people.”

These men were not referring to a depressing preoccupation with dying, but a dynamic approach to living. We, like the psalmist David, should pray: “Lord, make me to know my end, and what is the measure of my days, that I may know how frail I am. . . . Certainly every man at his best state is but vapor” (Ps. 39:4-5). David speaks of people who work in vain, heaping up wealth with no idea of who will get it (v.6). He concludes by affirming that his hope is in God, who alone can keep him from a life of spiritual rebellion and disaster (vv.7-8).

As we place our hope in God, the brevity of our life on earth is worth considering—every day.

Lord, we know that our life on this earth is so short
compared to eternity. Bless us, fill us, use us to tell
of Your love and goodness as much we can and
for as long as we can until we see You. Amen.
Considering the certainty of death
can provide a dynamic approach to life.

Lord, make me to know my end, and what is the measure of my days, that I may know how frail I am. —Psalm 39:4

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR OUR AMERICAN HEROES AND FOR OUR BELOVED NATION!

GEN. GEORGE WASHINGTON
THE PRAYER AT VALLEY FORGE

"Let Tyrants Shake Their Iron Rod"
William Billings
Mixed District Choir, Fairfax, Virginia

In the coldest and darkest days of the American Revolution, General George Washington raised his prayers for the survival of his beleaguered Army and of the new Nation. The Lord answered those prayers, upheld his Army through a punishing nadir to everlasting glory and bestowed His manifold benefits upon the new Nation.

In like manner, let our prayers now rise like a fountain for our Heroes in the American Armed Forces who seek to secure the benefits of Freedom on behalf of a people hungry for them. Father, look on our prayers for them with favor, guide their steps in righteousness and keep them in the shelter of Your Healing Wings. Bless and uphold them in the performance of their Mission. Through Jesus Christ, Your Son, with the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever, Amen.

Heavenly Father, Lord of the Nations, unto Your Divine Mercy we commend the souls of these brave men and women who have fallen in the service of our Beloved Nation and in defense of the Freedoms we hold dear. We pray that You gather them in Your loving embrace, that You cause Your countenance to shine upon them, and that You vouchsafe their souls to dwell eternally in Your Divine Presence. Through Jesus Christ Your Son, with the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever, Amen.
