After the CW ended there was a large military parade in DC. It took two days. The first day, iirc, The army of the Potomac marched. The second day, Sherman's army marched. Nowhere to be seen tho was General Sheridan. He was promptly dispatched to the Mexican border along with 50,000 troops. Now this came from a government that was hell bent on disbanding the most powerful army the world had every known up to that point. The cost per day to the government was staggering. Yet, that did not stop us from threatening Maximilian and the French, the first chance we got.
