Not to defend Lurch, but some of the reason the sloop was in RI instead of MA was there were additional modifications being made to the vessel after its original manufacture.

Secondly, Narraganset Bay and Newport, RI are one of the best places to sail a boat IN THE WORLD. It is much nicer than anywhere along the MA coast.
