I really think insanity is a symptom rather than a cause. There will always be mentally ill people and some of those will be predisposed to commit violent acts. They should be identified and institutionalized.

However, we seem to see a rising level of mass violence not only in the US, but around the world. Perhaps, it is just because of our ability to learn of them compared to 50 years ago, but I sense more of it.

Personally, I believe that Man is still coming to grips with the impact of technology on their lives. The change has been so rapid and profound that the human pschye can not absorb it all. It is far easier for someone to operate at the periphery of society and functiopn without having a lot interchange with other human beiings. You can live in a fantasy world and lose touch with reality.

In this case, I bet video games played a part in the way the shooter could dispassionately shoot people in cold blood in much the same way he does on a video game. He can look at a Tarratino movie and see violence depicted that is so realistic that he becomes inured to it in real life.
