Lautenberg: Action needed to stop gun violence

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D., N.J.) renewed his call for new laws to combat gun violence following today's school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

"This is a day of great sadness in America, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families. This latest shooting tragedy is an unthinkable act of violence carried out against young children and innocent people. Americans are sick and tired of these attacks on our children and neighbors and they are sick and tired of nothing being done in Washington to stop the bloodshed," Lautenberg said in a statement. "If we do not take action to address gun violence, shooting tragedies like this will continue. As President Obama said, we must act now 'regardless of the politics.'"

Lautenberg has often been a lonely voice on gun control, an issue that gets little traction in Washington but that he has steadily pushed. After the summer shooting at a movie theater in Colorado Lautenberg pushed his bill to ban the sale of high-capacity gun magazines.

U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz (D., Pa.) also broached the topic, though in a less direct way.

"While nothing can relieve the pain of this tragedy, we can work to prevent these situations from happening again by engaging in a serious conversation about the issue of gun violence in our country," Schwartz said in a statement. "Today is a day for mourning the loss of the victims and for coming together as Americans to provide support for the community."

Several other local lawmakers, including Sen. Bob Casey (D., Pa) and U.S. Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick (R., Pa.) have sent out messages of sadness and condolences, though without making any remarks on gun laws.

I do have to give credit to Mayor Segarra (D) of Hartfiord. Said today/now is about healing, any policy debates can come later.

Based on the leaks of Lautenberg's neurological issues, brain stem activity would be an improvement over what is left of his synapses.

This a-hole should be spending time in Florida enjoying retirement. Lautenberg is lousy on guns, freedom and cannot forget, he supports a nation speed limit of 55 mph like the late James Howard.

U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D., N.J.) renewed his call for new laws to combat gun violence following today's school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

Great idea! Long past time something is done about this. First thing - end the idiotic so-called "gun free" zones. Obviously the only people carrying firearms in these zones are criminals.

Had one law-abiding, responsible citizen been there and been armed the outcome may have been vastly different.

Had we had several new laws forbidding such acts - on top of the pile of laws that are already in place fobidding such acts - the outcome would have been exactly the same.

Someone evil and insane enough to kill innocent people and children and kill themselves isn't going to be concerned about breaking 5 laws or 50 laws. The only thing that will stop that kind of evil is equal or greater violence. Note, not deterrence. Not gun control, knife control, not even spitball control will stop that kind of evil and insanity. The only thing that will stop it is someone prepared and able to put an end to an incident. But the idiot liberal hand-wringers have taken away 99% of that ability by disarming every law-abiding citizen in the vicinity.

I lay these kinds of incidents, every one of them, 100% at the feet of the willfully ignorant fools that disarm people in the face of violence in these so-called "gun free" zones. They are not, and never will be "gun free" zones. They are only collections of undefended innocent victims waiting for the next lunatic.

Ha. What was just demonstrated is that giving up our defenses just cost 20 children their lives. Had responsible adults been allowed to be armed there then maybe, just maybe the incident could have been ended sooner with less loss of life. FBI statistics show this is the case. Yet the liberal hand-wringers want to do just the opposite of what makes sense.

This happened in a liberal state with strong gun control laws that didn't stop him.
This just shows that even those laws were not strong enough ‘to save the children’. We obviously need something stronger to 'save the children'

Common sense rule : If something doesn't work then you must need more of it.

Wadda you hate kids or sumthin??

The first “action” should be to throw this Bill of Rights hating, commie pig off of Capitol Hill. He’s been up there way too long.

Like most liberals "causes", this has less to do with reducing the loss of life than it does with advancing their agenda.

Twenty dead kids are nothing more to the left than a lever toward disarming the populace.

They do want a safe society, but it’s just an added conveniece that disarming everyone allows them to put everyone in chains. Slaves are very safe. They never shoot anybody. Captive people never give you any lip. Lots of peace and quiet.
