I've been to China...recently.In fact,I visited two of China's largest and most prosperous cities,Guangzhou and Shenzhen, both being within an hour or so of Hong Kong.Everything I saw in both cities suggests that even the people *there* live like animals.OTOH,Hong Kong *does* work thanks to the system (and infrastructure) left in place by the Brits and the hard work of the Chinese people there who live, and work,in freedom.

"Everything I saw in both cities suggests that even the people *there* live like animals." Right...
That's what happens when you strip people of their religion and culture.

You have to keep things in perspective. 40 years ago, everyone in China was dirt poor. Now China has 147 Billionaires and one MILLION new millionaires. It is not easy to upgrade 1,500,000,000 people’s standard of living.
Peking & Shanghai now has more millionaires than LosAngeles.

Lots of folks there live like folks did here in the days of Jackie Gleason’s “The Honeymooners”.
Not like animals, very modest by modern US standards.
A lot like I lived the last couple of years working through college...
