They are blaming the economy. Additional potential causes:
1. The decline in the birth rate through the recession means there are fewer babies and toddlers whose parents will line up and pay for photos.
2. Santa Claus may be too religious / traditional for politically correct businesses.
3. Parents concerned about the future are refusing to line up and listen to their kids rattle off long wish lists, decreasing demand for Santas, even when they have jobs.
