Accidentally did it to myself years ago while welding. Feels like teaspoons of sand were dumped in each eye!

Did the same thing in my yute arc welding without a shield. I couldn't believe that I didn't have sand in my eyes.

People who are unfamiliar with the outdoors can get into really serious trouble. He’s lucky it wasn’t permanent....................

I guess this proves it can happen

So so smart - knows everything. Has he ever heard why welders wear their welding helmets? Protect their eyes from the bright charges.

Same thing can be had watching a welder, or a long day at the beach or in the snow.

I’ve had Welder’s eyes - very painful. I wasn’t blind but my eyes watered so much I couldn’t see clearly. Even though I knew better than watching a welder, if several are working you can get it anyway, out of the corner of your eye.

I don’t know why seamen rarely complain of it, but I’ll guess they learn not to stare at the sea & keep their eyes turned toward the boat.

Anyone know how sailors in the old days avoided this?

Oh, when I was a very little kid my father was a welder and I remember the warnings from my mother. Those warnings worked very well for me, LOL. Thanks for reminding me - I can see my father in my mind’s eye even now with that face shield...

Don’t play around with seamen without wearing sunglasses, Anderson...

I guess he wasn’t on the road to Damascus. Unfortunately.

I heard a one-eyed monster saturated him with some sort of gelatinous microbe.

Too bad he didn’t fall off his horse riding on the road to Damascus. Might have done him some good.

That’s a good one, but the old saying that I was thinking of cautions one that too much, uh, self-gratification will cause blindness... lol...

This is really no joke and isn’t funny. Many early navigators were blind in one eye from taking sun sights by looking directly at the sun, a big reason indirect viewing devices, like sextants, were developed. Also, whenever there’s a solar eclipse, many people injure their retinas by looking directly at the sun.
