I realized this back when George W Bush had both Housess of Congress and the GOP did not do one thing to reduce government, stop[ deficit spending, revise the tax code, halt illegal immigration , etc. I recall commenting, upon hearing of yet another government beauracracy, Homeland Security, that I do not have a party anymore...and I probably never did.

Indeed you are right when you describe GWB and the GOP holding of both houses. They demonstrated precisely what they stand for at that time, and that is ever expanding government.
