Talk about a hard landing: About 2 million Americans, including 400,000 in California, will abruptly lose their unemployment benefits after December unless Congress votes to continue federal funding for extended benefits.
....About 2.1 million of the 5 million Americans receiving jobless benefits are on a federal extension that will end after Dec. 29, even if they have weeks remaining in their federal claim, according to Maurice Emsellem of the National Employment Law Project.
"It's a hard cutoff," he said. "There is no phaseout,"....
Congress has renewed extended benefits 10 times since the current round started in June 2008. At its peak, the program provided up to 73 weeks of benefits (99 weeks if you include state benefits), but now it provides only 14 to 47 weeks, depending on the state's unemployment rate. In California, the maximum is 47 (73 including state benefits).
..............Gary Larson, 48, a beverage marketing executive with an MBA from UCLA who has been out of work - for the first time in his career - since February. "I'm a white, middle-class guy who grew up in Pleasanton. There are people like me who seem to have the finest pedigrees who are not finding work," said Larson, now living in West Hollywood.
Larson thinks age may be a factor in his inability to land a job, but so is his profession. Marketing is the last place companies hire when their business picks up, he said. "It's seen as a variable expense you can easily shut off or turn on. The results are intangible."
Asked if federal benefits have allowed him to be more picky about a new job, he said, "It could be true for some people. I'm very, very motivated to get off unemployment. It's not enough money for anything but the basics."

Gary FIND SOMETHING ELSE besides marketing!!
Marketing isn't your thing.
Move!
Texas has jobs!
South Dakota has jobs!
Hold on there... he lives in West Hollywood. Do we want him exporting THOSE values to Texas or South Dakota?
From my calculation that leaves 59% of the city's population who tilt the other way.
Now that that's been discussed, what do you think about unemployment, federal benefits and the "chance" that giving unsustainable, long-term "benefits" is damaging and holds people back from taking jobs in other areas, the desirability of moving for work, etc?
Cry me a river. . . .most of these people who have their unemployment run out have been crusing, KNOWING they’d get more. Except now. . . .Emperor Bath-house has been re-elected, and no longer needs them. . . so, under the bus they go !!!
Should Congress reauthorize EB, by Bobo jiggering the Fed Un% rate prior to the election, he put back into play about half of the 23 states that, based on that rule, had to stop offering EB earlier this year.
I see that the MSM is warming up to the idea with trial balloon articles like this, but waiting for a White Hut directive.
According to the article CA has 73 weeks of unemployment benefits. That’s a year and a half. And they are bitching that we working Americans somehow aren’t doing enough for them?
When they lose unemployment benefits the Labor Department will say they are no longer looking for work and voila, the unemployment rate drops.
Perhaps Larson should MARKET himself!
And that is why he isn’t employed. Despite his MBA from UCLA (his “fine pedigree”) he’s not cut out for the job he is (we are left to presume) seeking - marketing [and I expect the irony isn’t lost on those interviewing him].
“Talk about a hard landing: About 2 million Americans, including 400,000 in California, will abruptly lose their unemployment benefits after December unless Congress votes to continue federal funding for extended benefits.”
But on the plus side, they’ll all drop off the unemployment rolls and the new numbers will be *fantastic*.
I read the article and they buried the lead ... Apparently a revived EB is being folded into the fiscal cliff bill....
The National Employment Law Project is a George Soros group. Some of their people are now working in the US Dept of Labor, which creates the Federal rules controlling such extensions.
