Doctors told Benjamin Pessahs family he might not live after he was shot in the head. But after waking from an almost month-long coma, Pessah said his first words and took his first steps just in time for Thanksgiving.
Pessah, of Burlingame, Calif., was walking home from a Halloween party in San Francisco Oct. 28 with two friends and his girlfriend when a stranger came up and touched his girlfriend inappropriately. Pessah, 21, stepped in to protect her when the man pulled out a gun and shot him in the head.
It was pretty bizarre and unnecessary, Pessahs older brother, Nick Pessah, told ABCNews.com. He [the stranger] attempted to shoot the group of four of them. He missed everybody but the last bullet hit my brother in the head.
When doctors first examined Pessahs injuries, they told his family he wasnt going to make it. At one point, doctors said he only had a 25 percent chance of living.
They werent going to operate because he was too severely injured, Nick Pessah said. Then they said they would attempt it but normally they wouldnt. They only did because he is young and has a chance at surviving. They werent sure if he was going to make it or not.
Pessah was in a medically induced coma for almost a month. But just a few days before Thanksgiving, his breathing tube was taken out and he said his first words. In a faint whisper, he said, Hi Mom. My mom was the only one who saw him speak and it brought her to tears, Nick Pessah said.
On Thanksgiving day, Pessah took his first steps with his parents and three brothers in his hospital room at the University of California San Francisco to cheer him on.

Just don’t tell him the election results!
Operation-”they only did it was because he was young”. With Obamacare the “Death Panel” would have ruled “he only has a 25% chance. WHY WASTE THE TIME AND MONEY”
I believe a descriptive adjective was omitted.
Of sourse he was Amish.
Thank goodness this happened in San Francisco where practically nobody gets a concealed carry permit. Otherwise, somebody might have got hurt.
Welcome back, Ben, you give your family and friends so much to be thankful for. Blessings for a long life.
Welcome back, Ben, you give your family and friends so much to be thankful for. Best wishes for a joyful Christmas and long life.
Thank God. Kid still has work to do here.
...there was a rock in the road. Couldn’t have been more than a pebble. Never really saw it! Lost control of the bike, went flyin’ about a hundred feet - came down right on my head. Cracked it wide open! Blood and stuff was just splattered all over the road, there...I broke every bone in my face. Hey, you know, when they found me, my eyes were hanging out of their sockets? Yeah, they pronounced me dead at the scene. I was in a coma for...well, they told me about a year...said I’d be a vegetable for life. Yeah, but I showed ‘em. Ever since then I always wear a helmet!
Yep, an Asian of some sort.
A great miracle. Many prayers were answered by Almighty God.
I noticed the reporter made sure to make an Obamacare death panel point that doctors don’t usually do anything to aid people shot in the head, but they made a special exception for this kid, this time.
In truth, our medical profession has always done all they could to save the lives in front of them with no regard to class, race or age. They would have tried to rescue a fifty year old victim just as they would a twenty year old victim before deathcare.
