The Movie Reviews

"Seeking a Friend for the End of the World" with Steve Carell, Keira Knightley, Melanie Lynskey, Connie Britton, Adam Brody, Gillian Jacobs, Patton Oswalt, T.J. Miller, Melinda Dillon, Rob Corddry, Rob Huebel, Amy Schumer

Rated R, 2012 "Common Sense" rating: Okay for 17+

There is an asteroid heading for Earth, and it will cause an extinction level event. The last space shuttle with a crew of 12 astronauts and scientists explodes near the asteroid belt, and there is no hope of saving the world. "Dodge" (Carell) watches in awe as his wife literally runs away from him, and he meets his neighbor, "Penny" (Knightley). They talk about what they wish to do before the end, and set out to accomplish their goals. This is a beautiful love story with humor, danger, adventure, and true love, too late. Carell did a much better job than I expected from his previous comedic performances, and he made a very believable suitor and lover. We really enjoyed it and gave it   ★★★★

"Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" with Benjamin Walker, Dominic Cooper, Anthony Mackie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rufus Sewell, Jimmi Simpson, Robin McLeavy, Alan Tudyk, Marton Csokas, Jaqueline Fleming, Laura Cayouette, John Rothman, Erin Wasson

Rated R, 2012 "Common Sense" rating: iffy for 16+

This fantasy interweaves the life of Abraham Lincoln with a serious vampire threat to the United States that leads to the War Between the States and the struggle to implement the Emancipation Proclamation. It is actually historically accurate (except for the vampires) throughout. There is a lot of gore and blood, but it is a vampire movie, after all. It is a fascinating tapestry woven by Tim Burton, and quite enjoyable with a willing suspension of disbelief. We thought it was great, and all the actors were amazing, especially Benjamin Walker (Lincoln).   ★★★★
