IIRC, the Pilgrims were very anti-Christmas. They were anti-Catholic, objected to the “...mas” (mass), and looked on the holiday as pagan. They “loosened up” after a few decades.
They "compromised their principles" after a few decades...the way we are doing with gay marriage, abortion, and so on...
That may be true in Pilgrim land, but Maryland was founded by Catholics, and the Swedes were in Pa. before William Penn....
