In CA, according to their website, a new car costing x dollars would be .0065x+81. Example: A certain car costs $25,000 new. At 0.0065(25000)+81 the registration would be 243.50. The 81 dollars goes to fees for registration, highway patrol and inspection exemption (no inspection for 1st 6 years but they charge 12 dollars for it anyway). I think my registration was about $55 in Ohio on a 15 year old clunker.

FReepers are so smart it makes it too easy to get an exact answer. Thanks for the detail on CA license fees.
