WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Classified material kept by the woman who conducted an affair with former CIA Director David Petraeus predates their liaison and does not come from the spy agency, sources briefed on the investigation told Reuters on Thursday.
The finding appears to bolster assertions by both Petraeus and his biographer, Paula Broadwell, that their affair did not put national security secrets at risk - a central question hovering over the scandal that brought down one of the United States' most respected public figures last week.
The CIA said on Thursday it had opened an "exploratory" investigation into Petraeus' conduct, building on the FBI's probe. Law enforcement officials have said they believe the FBI investigation is likely to end without criminal charges.
The scandal has cast a spotlight on the private lives of some of the nation's top national security officials.

So where is it that she was a reserve lt. colonel and had a TOP SECRET CLEARANCE??
Or am I misinformed??
Doesn’t everyone have at least a little classified information on the laptop? Last year’s SIOP target lists, some Critical Nuclear Weapon Design Information, sensitive sources and methods summaries, and perhaps a smattering of DOE Q are not that unusual. Who really cares about security regulations and the nonsense on “exceptionally Grave Damage” to the security of the United States? It’s convenient to take it home, so those of us who deserve to be above the law just do what we want.
When are the other “bimbo eruptions” (as the Clintoon administration used to call them) going to occur? It is pretty unlikely that Petraeus had an affair with just one of his female protogees.
That is true. But you don’t leave that stuff on your personal, unsecured, at home computer.
Unless her laptop was stored in a TS cleared facility and met FISMA security requirements then it most certainly DID put classified information at risk.
Anyone else would be going to jail.
If there wasn’t classified material on it, there sure is now, after the FBI search and seizure party at her house the other night.
Are you implying that my NORTON SYMANTEC TOTAL DEFENSE UNLIMITED KAPERSKY EARTHQUAKE THUNDERBOLT AND BATTLE CRY antivirus is not capable of defending my PC???
So much for my secret plan to take over the world...
(good point BTW)
From what I have heard, there were 20,000 pages... That’s a stack of paper 7 feet high.
This tells me that these emails were documents not love letters. It would take you a lifetime to type 20K pages. It has probably never been done. They have to be attachments...
After wikileaks, this is all an unbelivable, hilariously incredibly, laugh till you puke JOKE!!!!
To quote Master Chief: “LOL LOL LOL LOL”.
Whatever happens, Patraeus needs to tell the truth. That’s his only way out of this mess.
MI doesn’t take their work home with them. period. She’s a spy until proven otherwise.
Either on the laptop or just stuff some papers in your pants before you leave the reading room.
LOL! Good point. I’m still stuck in the old mindset that law enforcement “finds” evidence rather than bringing it with them.
Broadwell is or was in Military Intelligence, these documents are likely hers...she likely is in a heap of trouble for having them on her laptop at home. I’m pretty sure taking work home is a no no if it is classified.
"I'm Sandy Berger, and I approve of this message."
“If there wasnt classified material on it, there sure is now, after the FBI search and seizure party at her house the other night.”
Real investigations don’t include a logorrhoea description of what is and is not being discovered as though it is sports radio describing a game. Real investigations are circumspect.
This is theater. Sort of a Moscow show trial ala Chicago.
Petraeus and Broadwell’s last meeting together. Check out Broadwell’s dress.
Don’t forget to accidentally burn those copies along with whatever handwritten notes were on them.
