"...Mak, 31, grew up in Westchester, graduated from the University of Chicago and toiled in publishing in New York during his 20s before moving to Baltimore last year with a meager part-time blogging job and prospects for little else. About half of his friends in Baltimore have been getting food stamps since the economy toppled, so he decided to give it a try; to his delight, he qualified for $200 a month.

“I’m sort of a foodie, and I’m not going to do the ‘living off ramen’ thing,” he said, fondly remembering a recent meal he’d prepared of roasted rabbit with butter, tarragon and sweet potatoes. “I used to think that you could only get processed food and government cheese on food stamps, but it’s great that you can get anything.”

“...recent changes made to the program as part of last year’s stimulus package, which relaxed the restrictions on able-bodied adults without dependents to collect food stamps, have made some young singles around the country eligible for the first time...”

Sweet potatoes ~ a problem? They are far cheaper than rice or beans around here, and rabbit? Did he perhaps buy a rabbit, or shoot one a la Audi Murphy who fed his brothers and sisters by subsistence hunting.

Butter is pretty hum drum stuff ~ and so is tarragon.

When the end finally comes I’ll be living off rice and beans, but the schadenfreude of watching the abusers hit bottom will make it taste like steak.

These people can go !@#$ themselves, as far as I’m concerned. Lots of us who are paying taxes end up eating ramen so this whore can eat her fricking arugula.

Well, I was ALMOST over grieving for America’s demise - but every few minutes I find another reason to continue...

I loathe these posers/grifters/morons. There. I said it out loud.

And now, less motivation to try.

46 million now on food stamps.
It’s pretty much impossible to NOT know somebody on EBT these days.
Baraq’s “new normal”

A local tv station got a digital file of where Indiana issued TANF cards were swiped in ATMs - NYC, Disney (Fl & CA), Vegas, Nevada brothels, Puerto Rico, etc etc.

Foodstamps for hipsters is commonplace. What’s most amazing about this story is SALON is still publishing.

He earned income and paid plenty of taxes for 10 years, fell on hard times, signed up for food stamps.

Is it the proposal to cast this former taxpayer out on the street to starve now that we can't suck more taxes out of him?

They’re young, they’re broke, and they pay for organic salmon with government subsidies. Got a problem with that?

"... toiled in publishing..."

Sure. The same way Obastard "toiled" at community agitating. It's hard work.

Somehow I don't think Mark was "toiling" at changing plates, refilling ink or changing 5 ton rolls of paper in the pressroom.

I probably met their Dad on a chair lift in the Sierras in 1975. The guy next to me on the lift was bragging about how he worked only enough in the fall to buy a new pair of skis, boots and season pass. In the spring, he worked just enough to buy a new surfboard. He lived on welfare during the skiing and surfing season. At the time, I was working 60 to 80 hour weeks. I still have dreams of pushing the bastard off the chair when we were about 150 ft off the ground.
