And the FBI wouldn’t have made their investigation results public on a “private” matter.

And at worst Petraeus would have quietly resigned and no one would have known any different, particularly after a President’s new term starts and the people shift in and out of positions normally anyway.

There’s much more going on here than meets the eye. How this came down does not make sense.

The general chose to make the reasons public. It makes me wonder if he was being blackmailed about Benghazi and decided to reveal the affair so the blackmailers wouldn’t have anything on him.
