WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Corning is cutting up to 4% of its salaried workforce worldwide and the plant in Wilmington is currently considering how much impact it will have here locally.
WECT.com reached out to the company's corporate communications after getting a call that layoffs were mentioned Friday at the plant in Wilmington.
A spokesperson said a plan to reduce costs and restructuring will continue into 2013. Those actions include a layoff of about 500 salaried people companywide and adjusting the hourly workforce. The company would only say that Wilmington leaders are "evaluating the situation to determine the level of impact to its workforce. Any potential actions would be taken in early 2013."
Corning said earlier in the year they needed to restructure because of the "impact of the weak economy on all our businesses."

We haven’t quite cleared 20K layoffs since Wednesday...
It’d be sweet justice if the ones getting laid off were Obama voters.
If it’s random, about half are.
If I were the employers, it wouldn’t exactly be random...
and the beat goes on.
and the beat goes on.
Corning Optical Fibers (COF) (division of Corning, Inc.) will possibly be merged with Corning Cable Systems (CCS)(Another division of Corning, Inc. headquartered in Hickory, NC.)
COF makes the hair thin optical fibers, CCS coats & clads these fibers to give added strength & protection, then combines them into cables containing from 2 to several hundred fibers. One fiber can carry about 130,000 phone calls.
