It was named after a downtown bar of long standing, The Rhinoceros Club, to my knowledge. That little advertiser supported newsweekly has been a thorn in the side of bureaucrats in general and Democrats in particular for as long as I’ve lived here.

Their biggest issue of the year, every year for at least a decade now, is the county employee salary issue. The county gave them such a hard time about getting access to salary information for one person about whom they were writing a story, that they published the whole thing once they finally got it. Kept doing it. The apparatchiks hate it. The taxpayers are made livid by it. Just how many psychiatrists and psychologists does one county of a half million or so population really need, lol?

Orson Scott Card is a local who writes several columns for The Rhino. He’s a well known science fiction author, Mormon and conservative Democrat, or he was last I checked lol. This article in his weekly “Civilization Watch” makes me wonder if he didn’t finally make the switch.

Thanks...I know every year I go back for a week and one night we’ll go out to dinner and on the way home we have to go way out of the way in order to pick up a copy of this paper.

And every year I hear about how they used to get it at some supermarket but they quit carrying it. That really pisses the folks off.

We need a paper like this in Oakland, CA.
