President Obama, claiming his election "majority" was a vindication of his fiscal policy, held firm Friday to his intention to include tax hikes for America's top earners in any negotiations with Congress to pull the nation back from the so-called "fiscal cliff."
The president, in his first remarks from Washington since winning a second term, urged officials to "get to work" on the issue as he invited congressional leaders to the White House next week. He said he's open to "compromise," but did not appear to budge on what has been a central disagreement over the last two years -- whether to extend the Bush-era tax rates for everyone, or to let them lapse for households making more than $250,000.
"I refuse to accept any approach that isn't balanced," Obama said Friday. "This was a central question during the election ... and on Tuesday night, we found out that a majority of Americans agree with my approach."
"Our job now is to get a majority in Congress to reflect the will of the American people."

1.) IF the Fiscal Cliff really does involve REAL cuts, (not reduction in the rate of increase), to the Annual Federal Spending Plan, (the term Budget is no longer used as there have been no budgets approved in the last 4 years);
2.) THEN do we need to have a Fiscal Cliff EVERY year to actually reduce Federal Spending year to year?
3.) In this manner, the Federal Spending would continue to decrease like clockwork, while our sorry Federal Politicians do what they do best: AVOID WORKING!
Republicans should vote present when the tax increase comes to a vote and let Dems vote yes all by themselves. That way they get full credit for ‘saving’ the country.
The House should throw their hands up, use Barry’s words and then just say we are stepping out of the way, the American people have spoken. Let the Dem’s own it, don’t fight it. I’ll be dammed if I would take any of the blame for their policies.
At this point I think they should call his bluff if he is not willing to agree to serious spending cuts, let the fiscal cliff kick in. It will be a rough ride- time to buy chickens and milk cows and such...but that is coming anyway.
John.....Tell him to go take a HIKE!!
I’ll allow the rich to pay more in tax, if, DumBO resigns first. I don’t think he would honor his word the other way around.
the least FoxNews could have done was to report the story as they know it is:
unvarnished translation: “Obama holds firm to tax hikes as he invites Hill leaders to his lecture to them on ‘fiscal cliff”
Obama has never had a meeting with “Hill Leaders” except to lecture to them and in that lecture tell them what he expects from them; not to solicit or care what they have to say.
Ryan was demonized because he would not be lectured to by Obama.
