We boosted immigration from the third world in 1965, after being promised by Kennedy and others that the change “would not upset the ethnic balance of American society”. The GOP was never able to appeal to those immigrants.

Then in 1986, we passed Amnesty for 2-3M illegal aliens, after being promised that we would never need another amnesty because we would start enforcing our immigration laws. The GOP was never able to appeal to those immigrants either.

Now, we are contemplating another amnesty. What does the GOP think has changed?

More than half of all households headed by a Mexican immigrant (illegal or legal) receive some sort of means-tested welfare benefit, and given their level of poverty, those folks don’t pay federal income tax.

Why would the GOP’s messege of small government and economic liberty ever appeal to such people?

. . . More than half of all households headed by a Mexican immigrant (illegal or legal) receive some sort of means-tested welfare benefit, and given their level of poverty, those folks don’t pay federal income tax. . . .

H3ll, illegals of all ilk cost hundreds of billions NET per year as of 2010 study.

Low wage immigrants cost $20,000 NET per household as of 2007 study. As of 2007 there wee 4,550,000 low wage immigrant households.

Both parties have been busy importing poverty from cultures of big government dependence.
