About a year ago, I heard a radio interview with a person who was trying to keep open a Catholic church somewhere in Massachusetts, one that was scheduled by the Archdiocese to close. IIRC, the population had shifted from mainly self-reliant Italians and Irish but Latinos were now the dominant demographic. He said he tried desperately to convince the Hispanics to donate money for upkeep to assist in the cause, this Church could be the center of their community, one for weddings, masses and other services. He concluded that his pleas were denied because the Latinos believe government should pay for such things.

During the last big immigration wave(1880-1910) it was 30% of the new immigrants that went back to the old country-couldn’t hack it here-no freebees.

Catholicism is the State Religion of Mexico among other countries.

Why should they think the Government isn't paying for it?

My Mother's church has a significant number of hispanics, many of whom own homes in the area. They use church facilities for birthday parties and other purely social functions but contribute nothing.

My Mother, who grew up rather poor in southern California in the 40's, has the kind of attitude one might expect about these people, but the other old ladies don't seem to see a problem.
