How I do remember. It was the press. All conceded that the depression of the 1930's was a blot on human existence. This was so in America. The big cold chilling fear was unemployment. England worked and the war drove up employment.
The Sunday newspaper published a cartoon of a poor, gaunt woman. She was on her knees scrubbing a floor. Her thin face was strained. Churchill and his crew would bring this back, was the inference. Maybe the hard old rotters of the Tory party were best removed. Younger Conservative people were coming to the fore.
I came back from National Service overseas, when Churchill got back in after five years. Unemployment? Jobs were plentiful when I left five years later. The leftist press had absolutely labelled Churchill with deliberate unemployment policies. All speculation and lies.
