Grazing away at billions of euros

“New problems with European Union spending,” headlines Dutch daily, Trouw. A report on the implementation of the 2011 EU budget, published by the European Court of Auditors on November 6, notes spending “errors” of €5.2 billion ($6.6 billion) from a total €130 billion ($165.8 billion), and an increase in unjustified spending, up from 3.7% in the previous year to 3.9%.

The unjustified spending was particularly prevalent in the administration of funds for rural development, the environment, fisheries and health. …
