Jesus said that you would know a person by his fruit, i.e., by his actions. The same is true for nations. Our fruit is rotten. The fear of God is the "beginning" of wisdom. We have no fear or respect for the Living God.
We have loved and embraced what God hates. It's by His grace that we have been preserved as a nation. How much longer can we expect to enjoy His grace while we kill babies, enable perversion, call evil good and call good evil? I suspect not very long.
If history is a teacher, let's remember the civil war. We view this as a historic event, which it is. However, it also provides us insight into how God operates. We can also see God's hand in the ups and downs of ancient Israel. Bottom line: when a nation does evil God patiently offers it time to "repent", i.e., change and go the right way - His Way. In the case of the civil war, I believe that the cries of oppressed slaves over many generations were heard and after much long-suffering the answer from heaven was terrible and bloody. God is not mocked. What we sow - we will reap - unless we repent.
Still, there is hope in the story of Jonah and John 3:16.
