I used to think that, but I've been reading this neo-confederate blog Occidental Dissent and he's done a great job of convincing me that (most of) the South is pretty coherent. There are a few states that are wobbling. Florida, with the influx of Northern retirees, and Virgina with the DC infestation. But in the south the GOP controls both houses and the Governorship in all 11 states of the Old Confederacy. Despite states like Mississippi and Alabama having 33% black voters these states still went for Romney in the election, because Whites vote as a block. 89% went for Romney in Mississippi.
The South is not incoherent. As the author of the blog has pointed out: the South has opposed Obama in both elections, opposed every other liberal POTUS candidate for a generation, doesn't support gay marraige or the gay military, loves the military and sends her sons to fight in our wars, had to have much of the destructive Great Society pushed down their throats by Northerners and hasn't agreed to most of the drift leftward of the last 40 years: it has been forced on them, occasionally at bayonet point.
I agree with 208.
Just chop FL off below Gainesville; the northern tier of FL is solidly part of The South.
