Republicans lost and lost big. At TMCC, political science professor Fred Lokken's post-mortem is that since the glory days of Ronald Reagan, the country has become more diverse. The mostly older white male crowd seen at Mitt Romney rallies is not the cross section of America today. Republicans are missing an increasingly bigger boat.
As he put it, "In terms of the Latino vote, it has attracted the fewest number of Latinos to the republican ticket since Bob Dole, and it's actually worse than Bob Dole!"
The Hispanic vote for republicans is rapidly being lost, ever since George W. Bush won 44% of their vote in 2004. 4 years later, John McCain took 31%. Mitt Romney's share? Only 27%...12 million fewer Hispanics voting for the republican presidential candidate than just 4 years ago.
Many of those are turned off by republican pushes for voter ID, and the party's opposition to immigration reform. Lokken told us, "The stance that the party took this fall on immigration literally drove Hispanics back to the democratic party."
At the Reno headquarters for "Mi Familia Vota," Northern Nevada Coordinator Carla Castedo backs that up. She's heard it in her own neighborhood. She told us, "As soon as President Barack Obama was re-elected last night, some people were asking for immigration reform right off the bat."
Castedo's organization works to gets the Latino vote out. Don't let their small Reno office fool you. Behind the scenes, it's become a powerhouse. She proudly told us, "We registered across the state over 19,000 thousand voters for this election alone."
There was some good news for republicans they retained their majority in the U.S. House, and they increased their share of governorships. But the people involved in galvanizing the minority vote say that to really come back, the Republican Party has to give up old stereotypes, and relate to the voters of America today. Lokken says there's a new generation of Reagans somewhere out there, maybe a few who are Latino like Florida Senator Marco Rubio. Or even a Governor Sandoval.
As Castedo put it, "We do refer to Latinos as the sleeping giant, and I think that is completely eradicated. Speaking from last night, the giant has awoken, and we showed that with the votes."
“John McCain took 31%. Mitt Romney’s share? Only 27%...12 million fewer Hispanics voting for the republican presidential candidate than just 4 years ago. “
so a drop of 4% in hispanics = 12 million votes??? seems a bit off to me....
Nonsense.
Obama won because our people have become weak not because they are diverse..
Are these Hispanics legal or illegal? Was my vote cancelled out by those who are not legal voters?
Hispanics did not win the election for Obama. A few more points of the white vote would have been a much bigger deal than repeating GWBush’s 2004 performance with latinos.
And by the way, Bush did NOT win 44% of the Hispanic vote in 2004. That figure has been discredited. It was maybe, at most, 40%. That’s good for a Republican, but hardly nothing to brag about in light of how shamelessly Bush pandered and how weak Kerry was.
I don’t understand what the GOP is supposed to do to attract more Hispanics.
Move further to the Left?
How can we move further to the Left than Romney?
Any further and we might as well vote Democrat.
The GOP already supports historically high levels of Hispanic immigration.
So, we support more?
Are we supposed to support Amnesty?
Are we to believe Hispanics will end their support of European Socialism and suddenly embrace American Conservatism?
Rubio-Cruz 2016. There, fixed it.
It’s pure tribalism.
Hispanics voting to support Hispanics.
Blacks voting to support blacks.
Single women voting to support single women.
It goes on and on.
The war on Whites is underway. Racist minority grups are the shocktroops in the socialist takeover of America.
Illegals and foreigners voted. And not only “hispanics.”
My son, who is studying in Belguim, voted by Internet. The troops were not permitted to do this but my son was permitted vote over the net from a foreign nation.
I keep seeing articles today saying that Republicans have to do more for Hispanics in order to be elected. Well, let’s see. We could let them flood in to the country, as many as want to come, both legally and illegally. We could provide them with Spanish wherever and whenever they want it. Free education for their kids would be nice! And let’s never, ever offend them! And any Latino who wants to work should get affirmative action, while those who don’t want to work get welfare, food stamps and housing assistance.
And how about this...we could make them above the law! While people of other races have to buy auto insurance and health insurance, and while other races have to have licenses to drive, and have to obey laws such as how many people can live in one house or apartment, why, we could simply say that Latinos do not have to follow any of those laws!
And any Latino who shows up at an emergency room gets treated for free. Those of us with medical insurance will gladly pay higher rates for them! And if a Latino is here illegally, how about we make their children automatic citizens? There. Now they should be happy and will vote for us!!
Oh, wait....
“Hispanics did not win the election for Obama.”
They were a key component (blacks, Hispanics, white women). Hispanics arebeing imported to replace Americans (of all colors), and they are falling into the voting patterns of the blacks they are displacing. If “Americans” won’t have more children, they should get accustomed to this; the demographic timebomb allegedly occurring in 2050 has already occurred (see any playground or maternity ward), the media won’t tell us to prevent panic.
“Latino Vote Muscle Grows for Nevada Democrats”
Nevada is quickly transforming into a blue state.
Ain’t gonna be many mo’ Republicans coming out there for Congress much longer...
What to do? Make them all legal. They are here to stay anyway, so might as well get their votes.
I think most people vote as individuals.
I think most people have reasonably clear political principles and political goals.
If Thomas Sowell, a Black man and one of America's leading Conservative thinkers, ran for president, I don't think he get 15% of the Black vote.
OK, but how?
How do we entice Socialists to vote for Conservatives?
It's not going to work.
The GOP has spent the last 80 years becoming more and more like Democrats.
But the Dems still won't vote for us.
And they never will.
Actually I agree with you, somewhat. I think Thomas Sowell would be cast as an Uncle Tom, or more generally as a traitor to the tribe. I think that loyalty to the tribe carries a much heavier weight in the decision process of people than we think. Maybe it’s instinctual, “safety in numbers”, so to speak.
The article sates that there was an office for Hispanic outreach and the people there did yeoman’s labor in getting the vote out, going to houses, speaking Spanish, organized, organized, organized.
Did the Repubs have specialy groups/offices for Hispanic outreach like that? I bet not.
