SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) -- Puerto Ricans have endorsed U.S. statehood for the Caribbean island but also ousted the pro-statehood governor in a close election.

Why not? They may as well get in on all of the goodies about to be handed out.
Explain to me what this means. How much closer does this take them to (ugh) statehood?
Puerto Ricans “were collectively made U.S. citizens” in 1917 as a result of the Jones-Shafroth Act.
Puerto Ricans have a long history of service in the U.S. armed forces and, since 1917, they have been included in the U.S. compulsory draft whenever it has been in effect.
Do we American citizens have a vote or do we take it in the shorts again?
I think it’s great that they want to be a state, but I’m sorry to hear about Gov. Fortuno. He was one of the good guys and had done a lot to improve the Puerto Rican economy (mostly through privatization and promotion of PR as a business haven for mainland Americans).
Of course, he was heavily opposed by - guess who? - the unions.
I served in the military with some outstanding Puerto Ricans.
PR statehood would mean 2 more blue senators, more blue reps and more blue electoral votes. It also would make us officially bilingual. Obama would follow that by adopting Haiti as #52.
