The GOVERNMENT version of 'green' technology has more to do with the color of money and little to do with efficiency or value.
But...you would be amazed what those without government support can do. IIRC, the original design comes from third world countries, and the Mass Heater/Rocket Stove/Hobo Stove are all based on the same principle. It's really cool and if the SHTF, you might find you need a device like this.
This is a ROCKET STOVE - MASS HEATER. It heats the house. You can lay on it and it's warm. FUEL? Anything wood like that burns. Wood scraps, small limbs. Small amounts of fuel produce tremendous heat. It will continue to provide heat, hours after the fire is out.

There are ROCKET STOVES that just do cooking, and you can make one yourself out of tins cans.
Those people on the East Coast should learn how to build these...
