Officially, JFK won by 112,000 votes. However, in Alabama, people voted for individual Electors, not for candidates. Six of Harry Byrd's Electors won, but all of them voted for JFK. Thus, all popular votes cast for Byrd's Electors were awarded to JFK.

Many people also believe that Kennedy was elected because of massive vote fraud in Illinois.
Incorrect.
If the Illinois electoral votes were subtracted from Kennedy's total, Kennedy still had a small majority of electoral votes.
Many people do not realize that the vote was also extremely close in Texas, LBJ's home state, and that massive voter fraud there may have also given Kennedy the state victory.
If Nixon was in fact cheated out of BOTH Texas and Illinois, then Nixon did win the Electoral College and the presidency.
60’s rats were a different breed.....
Good point, Mac.
Somewhat. They still saw voter-fraud as political reality.
My recollection is that Chicago dead folks threw if for JFK.
The old man Kennedy (corrupt, sleezy, felon, etc - but then again, that’s not news when it’s about a Kennedy) bought things for the inept son.
And yes, JFK was inept...purchase “A Question of Character” should you doubt.
With Daley up in Chicago raising the dead, LBJ down in precinct 13 finding votes here, there & everywhere, and JFK’s people over in Massachusetts doing what Mass-holes do best, why—you had a Bermuda Triangle political scheiss-storm!
Nixon was urged to challenge but he knew what it would do to the country. Say what you like, Nixon was no algore.
I worked for Nixon-Lodge in 1959-1960, in Cook County, and we found (IIRC) well over 300 cases of vacant lots, parks, playgrounds, hospitals, schools and municipal bldgs and sewage treatment plants who voted multiple times for JFK-LBJ. The CC election officials (Mayor Daley’s hand-picked dem goons) accepted the evidence, but conveniently “misplaced” it all. The more things change, the more they remain the same.
Jackie Kennedy allowed only one person to sleep in the Lincoln bedroom. That was hizzhonor Richard Daley.
It was widely understood at the time that Nixon was cheated out of both Illinois and Texas. Unfortunately, he was too much the gentleman to contest the results.
JFK could count on the Chicago Mafia to give him Illinois. The reason he chose LBJ as his VP, although I had the strong impression at the time that he didn’t like him, was because LBJ could steal Texas for him. And did.
I have read several sources over the years that historians on both sides of the political spectrum say that the election results were so close in 1960. If anyone had a valid reason to contest an election result it was Nixon in 1960; not Gore in 2000.
Apparently several people in Nixon’s camp actually advised him to contest the results but he refused. He did not want to put the country through what Gore did in 2000.
