It may be that since Romney has been getting intel briefs from CIA and NSC, he may have been informed that a bi partisan gun running op was in effect and in all cases, al Qaeda and its affiliates were the primary benefactors.
Seems that only information that was equally damaging to republicans like McCain and Graham as it would be to Bronco would keep Romney from being on this issue.
