A new report by a liberal-leaning think tank recommends a dramatic overhaul of military pay, retirement and health care benefits as part of a $1 trillion cut in defense spending over 10 years.
The Center for American Progress calls for capping pay raises, eliminating military health benefits for many retirees who are covered by an employer-provided plan, and reducing the value of military retired pay as well as making retirees wait until age 60 to start receiving it.
Recommendations are included in a report, Rebalancing Our National Security, released Oct. 31 by the progressive think tank and advocacy group. The report opposes across-the-board cuts in defense spending that could occur beginning in January under sequestration but still calls for major reductions in defense spending.
Capping pay raises, the report says, could save $16.5 billion over the next five years. Reducing retiree health care benefits, through a combination of restricting care and raising fees, could save $15 billion a year. Reforming military retired pay could save, in the short term, up to $13 billion a year, and over time could save up to $70 billion a year off the current plan.

Food Stamp Growth 75X Greater than Job Creation
I am simply amazed by the scope of Evil that is present. Americans who vote for Obama are simply Evil themselves. There is no other word to describe it.
I know many people here have Christian reservations about Romney. You do as your soul bids. But in this election, I firmly believe that God will hold us accountable for our choice.
Yes, Romney is a Mormon. But he is the man that I (and the Rev Billy Graham) will be voting for.
You can tell a lot about a man by how much he loves his granddaughters and grandsons.
I recommend we cut Soros...take away his freaking visa.
I think we should cause a run on Soros assets and grab his accounts. Seems to me he could cough up a lot of assets, oil leases, gold, currency, land, business interests.
Let’s spread the wealth.
On a related note, the Jim Beam sponsored drink ‘n’ think tank verum ago has recommended George Soros kill himself and leave his assets to military charities.
Soros recommend Bejing and Moscow reach power-sharing agreement to run U.S. dictatorship.
His tentacles are so deeply embedded in American government that we’ll never be free of the SOB without burning DC to the ground.
Seems to me one of Congress’ first actions should be to seize the property of any resident Nazis ~ then take ‘em out and hang ‘em.
Unfortunately I fear that only you and a handful of FReepers even begin to comprehend his reach and influence in America.
Old George and his buddies can make all the recommendations they want when they’re swinging from that rope after the tribunal finds them guilty of Crimes Against Humanity. Soros is making money by having Obama start wars in the Middle East. Read Aaron Klein’s story in WND. Best be making your peace George. Why don’t you give us your neck size so the tribunal can save some time. Filthy, stinking Nazi grifter.
Bug: Your proposal is acceptable. </Men in Black>
You and I, CC, we tag team the crap out of Soros info. Now, if people in power would act with integrity and moral courage, we could strip the drip line Soros has sunk in our country, then, maybe then, we’d feel like an engine without a governor.
Can’t we just tell al qaeda where Soros is?
Since the Military is not unionized, Democrats see no need to protect any aspect of their benefit plan. Military benefits were based on a premise that the military was paid less than their civilian counterparts, were required to leave their profession sooner because of high physical demands, and had difficulty building equity nest eggs because of the frequent moves and overseas duty. Public employee pay and benefit plans used the military system as their model, but their employees did not face many of the disadvantages of military members. No matter, since they were unionized, these military type systems were installed in local and state governments nationwide and have been protected and fattened by Democrat politicians ever since.
Democrats have no concern or interest in military members and their families. They are not union. In their world, you only get support if you feed back some of your taxpayer paid wages and benefits to your union, who passes it on to Democrat politicians. Those folks get protected. All others are enemies, to be attacked at every opportunity. That’s the Democrat definition of economic justice.
Most military members understand this and don’t support Democrats. Unfortunately, Republicans don’t protect their interests very much either, preferring to channel their support to the defense industry.
Politicians will cut and run from any foreign commitment of troops when it becomes politically risky for them and they will eagerly cut pay, benefits, and readiness when the war is over without regard to what it will cost in lives the next time they decide to commit us to combat.
Far too many things that America gets involved in are a direct result of various Soros think tanks and his friends on both sides of the aisle. The International Crisis group was involved in Egypt (Mohammad ElBaredai was a crisis group boardmember).) They’re behind this Jospeph Kony thing in central Africa. Soros was involved with Kadaffi’s son just weeks before fighting broke out in Libya.
Unfortunately when it gets too close to our side of the aisle, eyes glaze over as people drift off to their happy place where they can think more comfortable thoughts.
It is time for Soros to meet his master Satan.
As I see it, this is another angle on returning the military forces to a Draft based military instead of a Volunteer based military. In the past I have seen reports that showed that a smaller “professional” Army was nearly six times as efficient as an “Draftee” Army lead by by professional Officers only.
And the enemies of America would dearly love to see the American Military reduced even further as far as efficiency goes.
