Victims of superstorm Sandy on the East Coast struggled against the cold on Sunday amid fuel shortages and power outages, two days ahead of an election that polls suggest is a dead heat between President Barack Obama and his Republican rival.
Fuel supplies were rumbling toward disaster zones and a million customers regained electricity as near-freezing temperatures descended on the U.S. Northeast overnight. But New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg warned the city that it would be days before power was fully restored and fuel shortages ended.
The power restorations relit the skyline in Lower Manhattan for the first time in nearly a week and allowed 80 percent of the New York City subway service to resume. But some 2.5 million homes and business still lacked power across the Northeast, down from 3.5 million on Friday.
The post-storm chaos in the region has overshadowed the final days of campaigning, making voting an afterthought for many.

NOT covered by the fawning MSM:
The DNC and their Unions would NOT allow repairs
by non-Union(duespaying) personnel.
I have been ticked off with Christie, but at least he read the unions the riot act, telling them they WILL NOT stop nonunion workers from helping people in need.
Ask how many people remember the sanitation workers strike in NY. Tens of thousands of tons of garbage and trash piled up on the streets and if a person had a pickup to haul his own trash he wasn’t allowed to enter the dump. Or put it back.
How many people remember that? There will be lots of indignation but that’s about it.
I recall a story about some poor slob who tried to commit suicide by jumping out a sixth floor window, only to land in a pile of garbage and survive...
I guess even some strikes have a purpose.
The IBEW holding the disaster victims hostage stinks, imho.
I truly feel for the people affected by Sandy and the loss of the homes as well as the millions who lost power/Gasoline/water etc.
As an observer from the outside I bring to mind that James Burke in the PBS series Connections brought this scenario up almost 30 years ago. He called New York City and others like it “Technology Traps”. Sandy proves it, only in this instance the people know that it is temporary and that help is on the way. That help may be moving slowly but it is coming.
What all thinking people need to do now and into the future is to learn the lessons from Sandy and figure out how to incorporate those lessons into our own SHTF plans.
Cold Storm Front: Democrats, Obamatrons, minorities, women and children hardest hit.

Plus we have a big storm coming Wednesday. Things are really, really, bad in NY/NJ
I was working at a just-opened Manhattan night club then, between 79th & 80th on Second Avenue. Upstairs was open for business, but the construction crew still had debris to remove from the basement, so their dump truck was out front. We took the oportunity to add some of the bar garbage to it, and apparently were ratted out to the union.
On about the third day we had a threatening "visit" from several waste disposal technicians displeased with our "strike breaking" efforts. A couple of the bouncers and I met them outside, armed with the iron pipe supports that held up some bar height tables that fold down against the wall for the stand up crowds on weekends. A couple of them were carrying what looked like broomsticks. A lot of nasty words were exchanged, but when a patrol car from the one-nine pulled up, they decided to leave.
One-nine = 19th Precinct.
Sandy wasn’t a superstorm.

The hybridization of hurricane Sandy
(excerpt)
Every so often, a quiet corner of research suddenly grabs the spotlight. Such was the case this week when a Category 1 Atlantic hurricane morphed into Superstorm Sandy (note- it wasnt a hurricane when it made landfall, it was an extratropical cyclone Anthony), wreaking tens of billions of dollars in damage and taking scores of lives in the eastern United States.
Sandys destiny as a hybrid storm was flagged to the public several days before landfall, when the irresistible name Frankenstormcoined by a NOAA meteorologistwent viral. (Of course, in the original Mary Shelley novel, it was the scientist rather than the monster who was dubbed Frankenstein, as Bay Area meteorologist Jan Null pointed out to me.)
This was the first time I had ever heard the term “cyclone” used to describe a weather event in North America.
Aren’t cyclones usually associated with the Indian Ocean ?
Naming convention per the NOAA.

The use of “cyclone” in “extra-tropical cyclone” is a general term that refers to winds rotating near the surface of the Earth in an counter-clockwise fashion that is the opposite of an anti-cyclone.

30-50F colder in the West Snow could reach the coast as far south at Virginia
NWS HYDROMETEOROLOGICAL PREDICTION CENTER COLLEGE PARK MD SUN NOV 04 2012 Excerpts
VALID WED NOV 07 SUN NOV 11 2012
SIGNIFICANT NOREASTER LIKELY THURSDAY MUCH COLDER IN THE WEST BY NEXT WEEKEND
THE GUIDANCE HAVE STRONGLY CONVERGED ON A RATHER ROBUST CYCLONE HEADED UP THE EAST COAST MID-LATE WEEK.
FORECAST FOR WED-FRI/D3-5 AT THE LEAST A VERY REAL POSSIBILITY OF HEAVY RAIN AND STRONG WINDS ALONG THE COAST FROM VIRGINIA TO MAINE AS THE SYSTEM DEEPENS INTO THE 980S MB OFF THE COAST OF NEW JERSEY.
ENOUGH COLD AIR SHOULD BE IN PLACE OR DRAWN IN TO SUPPORT SNOW THROUGH THE INTERIOR OF THE NORTHEAST THOUGH SOME ENSEMBLE MEMBERS DO BRING SOME SNOW ALL THE WAY TO THE COAST AS FAR SOUTH AS VIRGINIA.
30-50F colder in the West
THE WEST IS NOT TO BE OUTDONE AS A VERY DEEP TROUGH DIGS INTO THE CENTRAL ROCKIES. WITH ENERGY SLIDING EASTWARD ALONG THE US/CANADIAN BORDER NEXT WEEKEND THERE SHOULD BE A TREMENDOUS TEMPERATURE SWING OVER MOST OF THE
WEST BETWEEN WEDNESDAY AND FRIDAY/SATURDAY ON THE ORDER OF 30-50F DEGREES COLDER AFTER THE COLD FRONTAL PASSAGE.
THIS COULD SUPPORT SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL OVER THE HIGHER TERRAIN THAT MAY EVEN FIND ITS WAY TO THE LOWER VALLEY FLOORS IN SOME LOCATIONS /THOUGH WITH LESS PRECIPITATION/ OF THE GREAT BASIN/CENTRAL ROCKIES.
UPSLOPE SNOW IS LIKELY ACROSS WESTERN MONTANA WITH A STRONG PRESSURE GRADIENT BETWEEN THE LOW EXITING ONTO THE PLAINS NEXT WEEKEND AND HIGH PRESSURE OVER ALBERTA.
