Assuming that Obama actually wrote the book himself, much of what he wrote referred to attitudes that he or others had at particular time in the past (or to attitudes that he wanted readers to think he or other people (real or imaginary) had in the past). He's not somebody I would vote for, but that doesn't change the fact that many of these statements are taken out of context.
Regardless if he wrote the books himself- or if he tried to excuse them as the way they all felt in the past, the racist remarks are still there under his name.
That would have killed a white candidate.

Don’t fool yourself, the remarks are not taken out of context- and you can rest assured he still feels that way.
